WOONSOCKET HEAD START HOSTS HEROES
Students and parents make cards for troops, enjoy hockey with Providence Bruins
Woonsocket, MA —This holiday season, the Woonsocket Head Start Child Development Association, Inc., (WHSCDA) celebrated and honored local heroes. In November, students at the Highland Park Children's Center celebrated a special visitor, the father of student Tristan Boyns, who returned home from service in Afghanistan the day before. Sgt Boyns and his wife, Caitlin, honored deployed soldiers by helping students create personalized cards.
“Sgt. Boyns and his wife Caitlin, came in to help the children make very special thank you cards for some of the soldiers who are still in Afghanistan and are unable to return home for the holidays. All the children really enjoyed being a part of this special activity and showed their own creativity in their individual cards,” says Sara Litchman, Preschool Teacher at Highland Park Children's Center. “We thought it would also be wonderful to send this group photo of all of us together in each one of the cards so when these soldiers receive the cards it will also brighten their day.” On Thursday November 17th, The staff and families at Cass Park Children’s Center welcomed heroes of a different kind when Providence Bruin goal tender Michael Hutchinson and right wing Tyler Randell visited to autograph pictures and play hockey with Head Start and Child Care families. According to WHSCDA Executive Director Mary Varr, the event focused on families staying active with their children. The event was free for all Head Start and childcare families in the agency. This was truly a community event as the hockey nets were donated by the MacColl Field YMCA in Lincoln and the hockey sticks donated by the Woonsocket YMCA. Parents and children had the opportunity to drop in or stay for the entire two hours. Since 1974, Woonsocket Head Start Child Development Association, Inc. has helped thousands of children get the best start on their formal education and have partnered with just as many families to support them as their child's most important and influential teacher. WHSCDA is committed to developing partnerships with parents, which support their role as primary educators of their children. They offer comprehensive early childhood education and family support programs that enhance the growth and development of children and families, respond to their changing needs, and contribute to the betterment of the community.
